Number the stars
Number the stars is about the leading character Annemarie Johansen. She is caught up in the events surrounding the rescue of the Danish Jews. She and her family risk their lives to help Annemarie's best friend, Ellen Rosen, by pretending that she is Annemarie's older sister who died earlier in the war as part of the Resistance. And the Nazi forces have occupied the country for over three years. Both girls try to live normal lives under this press. However, they notice the occupation more each day. One day, Annemarie to Mr. Hirsch's corner shop to buy a button for her sister Kirsti. And she finds out that it has been closed by the Nazi authorities. That is how the story begins. At the novel's end, Annemarie asks her father to mend Ellen's Jewish star necklace (which had been broken off the night the apartment was entered by the Nazis in order to conceal her identity), wanting to wear it herself in honor of her friend.
