the reponse for SCMP

The latest strategy from government is about to re-size the amount of students in each class of secondary school. The numbers will decrease from 38 students per class to 36 students per class in 2009 and 34 students per class in 2010. Within the project, Hong Kong government should pay 140 billion HKD every year.

My point of view is to progressively pass along from big-class-teaching to small-class-teaching. There are lots of benefits for small-class-teaching. And they are:
1. Improve classroom atmosphere, students receive more individualized attention and teachers have flexibility to use different instructional approaches/assignments.
2. Have fewer students to distract each other; lower level of noise.
3. Enable teachers to know the students better and can offer more extra help; recognize learning problems/special educational needs.
4. Have fewer discipline problems. By spending less time on discipline, teachers report spending more time on instruction.

And these conditions are being more effective in a class within 15 and 19 students, adequate classroom space and adequate supply of qualified teachers. As we look back to the strategy that Hong Kong Government is talking about, the class limit is 36 students per class. It is such a big range throughout. And the geography of Hong Kong is adequate space of classroom. Besides, more money to educate a large amount of qualified teachers is a hard work to do in this situation.

Further more, the small class strategy should not prevent from the discontent of big schools. Big schools want to make money from their historic and legendary school name but it will only become a disease in the new changing.

Therefore, I suggested passing along progressively. It can provide a short period for government, teachers and students to improve themselves and provide them a better psychological environment.

history

The five concepts is imaginative, creative, sensitive to society’s needs, breaking from the past and foresight. The Hong Kong government is always talking about fostering inventors but all they have done is only build up a Cyber Port. And Hong Kong government just leaves it alone. The sponsor from Hong Kong is very least as well. Besides, the Hong Kong society is all talking about how to make money on the stock market. That makes “inventor” become a not-in-popular profession.

We learn some of these qualities in school. We try to be creative and imaginative on art lesson in Methodist College. Those qualities are for creating a new picture.

1. Which revolution does Hong Kong need?
Hong Kong doesn’t need any revolution. Not the American Revolution, the French Revolution, the Industrial Revolution or even the Cultural Revolution. Due to Hong Kong have no any strategy of the military. And if the Hong Kong people are going to Hong Kong people step up for protecting themselves, the PLAs will watch over us. Therefore the revolution is not a smart choice. Besides, the current discontentment of Hong Kong will not create big action at all. So we do not have to create any revolution.

2. What are five basic qualities that a good inventor might have?
Firstly, a good inventor might hard-working, patience and creative. As we can see from Thomas Edison, although the patent described several ways of creating the carbon filament including "cotton and linen thread, wood splints, papers coiled in various ways," it was not until several months after the patent was granted that Edison and his team discovered a carbonized bamboo filament could last over 1200 hours.
Then, an attentive heart is indeed. Like the experience of Isaac Newton discovered universal gravitation.
And finally here comes optimisic. A inventor should belive in themselves and keep on working on it. Or else, there are nothing going to be happaned.

Guiding Questions
How did the colonists unite America?
How did the legislature take part in the structure of the federal government?
How did the American Revolution happen?
Why did the people in the Enlightenment object to absolute power?
Explain one of the British acts that created economic discontent amongst the American colonists.

The Answers
1. The high-handed policy announced in the First Continental Congress. It was about to join the 13 colonies together. And it took place in Philadelphia in September, 1774.

2. The legislature was on top of the federal government. Obviously, the legislature ruled the country and even the legislature, executive and judiciary was under controlled by the legislature.

3. There were few reasons to cause the American Revolution. Firstly, the British Government appointed a governor to each colony to share power with the local council. Later, the British Government tightened its rule and it caused the discontent from the 13 Colonies. Secondly, Britain got cheap raw materials and a big market for her goods from the 13 Colonies. Yet she did not let them produce things that would compete with her goods. They wanted to trade freely and this caused the economic discontent. Lastly, after the Seven Years’ War, Britain kept an army in North America. The British government passed some acts so that the colonists had to pay for the cost of keeping this army. Finally the quarrel between the British and American over right to tax leads the American War of Independence.

4. People in the Enlightenment object absolute power because they are educated. And there is some new idea about rights of people appeared. They also think that they have to stand up for themselves for being fair in the society.

5. The British acts that created economic discontent amongst the colonists because Britain get cheap raw materials and a big market for her goods from them. And then, she did not let them produce things that would compete with her goods. Therefore the colonists thought that this policy was not fair and the discontent begins.

Number the stars

Number the stars is about the leading character Annemarie Johansen. She is caught up in the events surrounding the rescue of the Danish Jews. She and her family risk their lives to help Annemarie's best friend, Ellen Rosen, by pretending that she is Annemarie's older sister who died earlier in the war as part of the Resistance. And the Nazi forces have occupied the country for over three years. Both girls try to live normal lives under this press. However, they notice the occupation more each day. One day, Annemarie to Mr. Hirsch's corner shop to buy a button for her sister Kirsti. And she finds out that it has been closed by the Nazi authorities. That is how the story begins. At the novel's end, Annemarie asks her father to mend Ellen's Jewish star necklace (which had been broken off the night the apartment was entered by the Nazis in order to conceal her identity), wanting to wear it herself in honor of her friend.

history

The differences:
There are differences from the Colonial period of Hong Kong and United States. The United States from the start of European settlement and Hong Kong is launched by the United Kingdom and being the Colonial Hong Kong. To the politic states, United States is being independence but Hong Kong is under controlled by the United Kingdom government. And In 1938, Guangzhou fell to the hands of the Japanese, Hong Kong was considered a strategic military outpost for all trades in the far east, though Winston Churchill assured that Hong Kong was an "impregnable fortress". It was taken as a reality check response since the British Army actually stretched too thin to battle on two fronts. It also shows that Hong Kong is under protect of the United Kingdom Government.

The similarities:
The United States and Hong Kong politic are under the legislative. And the legislative is being more important in the society in both country. In another hand, seaports are important in both United States and Hong Kong. Seaport is a very large trade in both countries. Besides, because of the well development of seaport so that the seaport become another transportation way also.
